Rajasthan is a name of Hindustani origin. It means “The Land of Desert”, a reference to the wide and inhospitable Thar Desert that occupies most of its territory. It also means “The Land of Kings”, because several kingdoms flourished here during the medieval and early modern era.
Thanks to its visionary rulers, who surrounded themselves with the top craftsmen and artists of their era, Jaipur, which was founded in 1727, quickly developed into a melting pot of people and ideas.
The blue pottery and iron carvings, as well as traditional performances like the Ghoomar and Chari dances, are examples of today's crafts that reflect this remarkable cultural heritage.
